I agree with you and with SJ -- it's one thing to be told we lack something, but it's still up to us to find it. Even if we're told what we lack, without the search, the seeking, the journey, we won't experience it for ourselves.

Sometimes, there are no answers to be had on this side of the veil. I don't know why we lost our daughter, but the experience has profoundly deepened my faith and stretched my perspective... perhaps the answers aren't as important as the journey, the experience. Perhaps the only answer is "God Is Sufficient." All I know is that I have absolutely no reason not to trust Him, and every reason to trust Him.

I appreciated hearing you take exception with some 'christian' songs which try to have all the answers in a 3 minute song. I would say that as Christians, we often think we have to have an answer. That, somehow, this is expected of us. We deceive ourselves if we think we have all the answers and are being dishonest with ohters when we act like we do. Only God can make that claim.

Lance: Like how I keep you coming back for more? It's good marketing
SJ: Thank you. That's a very encouraging comment.

Your phrasing gave me a fresh perspective on the concept of 'gravitas', the critical weight of soul maturity that used to be recognized and valued in the church as a whole. Without that space you reference, we erroneously learn that lack of answers is bad or wrong. Pastors and Sunday school teachers --even faith-based schools-- train us to have the exact right answer every time. We no longer acknowledge that there _are_ gaps, that doubt _is_ necessary to faith.

I appreciate greatly your astute view of much christian art today. Reading your words that it rushes in to answer our questions helps me understand why I often feel insulted by it. True art tells me that I lack something; it will not tell me what I am lacking. It expects me to find that myself.

My thanks for your value of language. Truth is never easy, but the truths you've articulated in this post are beautiful to me. I'll be savoring several phrases the next couple days!

t another point, I’d like to take a more philosophical look at the experience of God’s absence or disappointment with God in the context of faith.

Okay, I'm eagerly awaiting THAT post now.
